First BFA Global Economic Development and Security Forum Opens in Changsha

The first Global Economic Development and Security Forum of the Boao Forum for Asia (BFA) opened in Changsha on the afternoon of October 19, 2021. Zhang Qingli, vice chairman of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) National Committee, attended the opening ceremony and delivered a keynote speech. Ban Ki-moo, BFA chairman and former secretary-general of the United Nations, made a speech via video link. Zhou Xiaochuan, BFA vice chairman and chief representative of China to the BFA, attended the opening ceremony and delivered a speech.

Zhang Qingwei, secretary of the CPC Hunan Provincial Committee, attended the opening ceremony. Mao Weiming, deputy secretary of the CPC Hunan Provincial Committee and governor of Hunan Province, made a speech. Wu Lan, deputy secretary of the CPC Hunan Provincial Committee, participated. Li Baodong, BFA secretary general, presided over the opening ceremony.

Danilo Turk, honorary president of the first BFA Global Economic Development and Security Forum and former president of Slovenia; Jurin Laksanavisit, Thai deputy prime minister and minister of Commerce; Viktor Zubkov, BFA board member and former prime minister of Russia; Jean-Pierre Raffarin, member of BFA Advisory Committee and former prime minister of France; Esko Aho, former prime minister of Finland; Surakiart Sathirathai, BFA broad member and former deputy prime minister and former minister of Foreign Affairs of Thailand; Mathias Cormann, secretary general of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development; Kevin Rudd, former prime minister of Australia; and, Yukio Hatoyama, former prime minister of Japan, made speeches via video link or telephone. Marcos Troyjo, president of the New Development Bank, spoke at the ceremony.

The forum is BFA’s first thematic conference concerning economic development and security. With the theme of economic security and sustainable development in a world of great change, the event features a main forum, 24 sub-forums, and several exhibitions. Attendees will hold in-depth discussions on topics such as the risks, shortcomings, and uncertainties facing globalization, and the economic development of various countries.  They will also probe into economic and non-traditional security issues, and accordingly put forward prospective thoughts and solutions for sustainable development of Asia, the world, and human being.

The attendees included provincial leaders Xie Jianhui, Zhang Jianfei, Wu Guiying, Chen Fei, He Anjie, Li Min; Zeng Weixiong, deputy director of the National Narcotics Control Commission and chairman of the BFA Global Economic Development and Security Forum; Zheng Guoguang, secretary general of the National Disaster Reduction Committee and vice chairman of China Society of Emergency Management; Chen Zhimin, deputy director of the Social and Legal Affairs Committee of CPPCC; Zhou Guoping, member of the Party Committee of State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission of the State Council and chairman of China Anneng Group; Chen Jian’an, vice president of the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade; Wang Fukang, former Chinese ambassador to Maldives; Graham Fletcher, Australia's ambassador to China; Gabit Koishybayev, ambassador of Kazakhstan to China; and Tuvshin Badral, Mongolian ambassador to China.

Comrades from central ministries and commissions, some provinces and municipalities, some diplomatic envoys, entrepreneurs, experts, and scholars attended the meeting.
